Stocks
A gift of appreciated securities that have been held for
more than one year can offer significant tax advantages. Giving such securities
is simple, but you should always consult your tax advisor before doing
so.
To transfer shares electronically: When you do not have
possession of your stock certificates, transferring stock electronically is the
most efficient way to give. The steps are:
- Provide written instruction to your broker, indicating
your desire to contribute stock to the American Red Cross of Santa Monica. In
the letter, be sure to include: Name of stock and number of shares to be
donated; The American Red Cross of Santa Monica brokerage account number:
JP82971-33; And Paine Webber's DTC (Depository Trust Company) number: 0221.
- Copy the American Red Cross of Santa Monica on the
letter, and be sure to include your mailing address so we can thank you
properly and provide appropriate documentation for a charitable deduction for
your tax return. OR,
- Contact Howard Kern, our financial advisor of
record, at the Paine Webber offices in Century City at (310) 772-7033 or (800)
553-9847.
That's all! When we have received the transferred shares,
we'll send you a thank you letter, suitable for tax purposes, along with our
appreciation.
To Donate Stock Certificates: If you have actual
possession of stock certificates and wish to donate them, we can accept endorsed
certificates for deposit to our account when accompanied by a specific form,
which we will fax or mail to you for completion. To obtain the form, contact the
Red Cross at (310) 394-3773 x 104. Upon receiving the form, complete it, and
mail it to us along with a notarized letter of authorization and copy of your
photo identification such as your driver’s license at the following address
(instructions will also accompany the form):
Development Department American Red Cross of Santa
Monica 1450 Eleventh Street Santa Monica, CA 90406-1008
