Hurricane Warning Issued for Southern Baja California

Hurricane warning issued for southern Baja California

• STORY HIGHLIGHTS
• NEW: Hurricane warning issued for powerful Category 4 storm
• Hurricane Jimena has 145 mph sustained winds
• Storm is expected to move northwest toward Mexico's Baja California

(CNN) -- Mexico on Monday issued a hurricane warning for the southern Baja California peninsula in preparation for Hurricane Jimena, a powerful Category 4 storm packing winds near 145 mph (230 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

A hurricane warning means hurricane conditions are expected within 24 hours. The storm could bring 2 feet of rain to the area, forecasters said. Jimena was about 355 miles (570 kilometers) south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, according to the hurricane center. It traveled northwest near 8 mph (13 kph), but meteorologists anticipate Jimena will pick up speed in the next day.

Forecasters said they expect the storm to continue in a northwest motion and approach the southwestern tip of the Baja California peninsula Tuesday.

"It's not expected to change in strength very much during the next day or so," said Daniel Brown, a hurricane specialist at the center. "It may begin to weaken a little as it approaches the Baja peninsula, but it's expected to remain a very dangerous hurricane, perhaps a Category 3 as it approaches that area."

Jimena is the 10th named storm of the Pacific season.

Residents should get prepared for some potentially rough conditions in places where Jimena is expected to hit, Brown said.

Tropical Storm Kevin also is making its presence felt in the Pacific Ocean, but it is weak and is not expected to do any damage, according to Brown.
